Liverpool’s players have featured prominently, with Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher named in the Premier League team of the season so far.
But there was one notable absence from his All-Star team.
As the season reaches the halfway point, the Reds are clearly at the top of the table. Jurgen Klopp’s men are three points clear despite a tough win at Newcastle on New Year’s Day. Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa follow Liverpool, who face a huge challenge if they are to win a second league title in four years. But Klopp can be pleased with the squad’s progress after this summer’s rebuild.
Their hard work is reflected in the rich representation of Neville and Carragher’s side so far this season. Sky Sports pundits and former defenders have each picked their standout player of the campaign to kick off the 2024 campaign on Monday Night Football. Ironically, Neville chose the Reds star as a sub over Carragher.
The former Manchester United captain has chosen Alisson Becker as his target, while Carragher has chosen Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario. However, Carragher called Alisson “the best goalkeeper in the world”.
Elsewhere, three Manchester City players were named in two teams, with Neville opting for Rodri and Erling Haaland and Carragher opting for Bernardo Silva. Only two Arsenal players made the cut in William Saliba and Declan Rice, while Unai Emery’s side are currently in second place and no Aston Villa players have been included in either squad.
