Wrexham hero Paul Mullin was a Liverpool fan as a child and spent time at the club’s academy as a child.

However, he revealed that the person who gave up on his dream of playing for the club he supported was none other than current Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

Steve Cooper moved to Liverpool from Wrexham Academy and spent five years there before leaving for England. Mullin’s mother said she was “sorry” her son had been released by Cooper, who led the England Under-17s to FIFA U17 World Cup glory before taking on managerial duties at Swansea City and Forest. “You’ll get him back eventually,” Cooper replied, “I hope so.”All this is revealed in Mullin’s new book, My Wrexham Story.

The prolific lower league striker, who shot to fame scoring goals there and starred in TV series Welcome to Wrexham, revealed he tested out his time at Liverpool’s academy, using him as a left-back. , as it is known today, than the previous position. “I was stuck at left-back and had little chance to prove myself as a creative footballer who could offer a lot in attack,” he said. After his release, Mullin joined Huddersfield Town’s academy, but his first team appearances came after a move to Morecambe.

Mullin spent three seasons there before playing for Swindon Town and Tranmere Rovers, but his goal-scoring talents shone at Cambridge United, where he won the League Two Golden Boot in the 2020/21 season. He then moved to Wrexham under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and has scored 85 goals in 110 appearances for the club to date, including 47 in all competitions, as they won promotion back to the Football League last season.
