Luis Diaz scored his first international goal as Colombia beat Brazil 2-1 in World Cup qualifying on Thursday.
Brazil took an early lead as Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli scored his first international goal following a brilliant display from Vinicius Junior. Vinicius limped off midway through the first half with a suspected hip injury. Colombia dominated the game in terms of chances, but Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker made eight saves to give the visitors the lead. However, in the 75th minute, Liverpool team-mate Diaz beat Alisson with a header from Christian Borja’s cross.
Four minutes later another Diaz header, this time James Rodriguez, gave Colombia a deserved victory. Reunited with his family nearly two weeks after he was kidnapped, he was among the crowds gathered at the Estadio Metropolitano in Barranquilla. A video of his son’s emotional celebration after scoring two goals quickly went viral on social media.
