John Aldridge admits Liverpool will significantly improve their Premier League title race despite winning the Merseyside derby.
The Reds beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday. However, Jurgen Klopp’s men were able to accept the referee’s decision in the match. Ashley Young received two yellow cards and was sent off for the Toffees in the 37th minute. However, Aldridge was unimpressed by the performances of Salah, Alexis McAllister and Kostas Tsimikas replacing the injured Andy Robertson.The former Kop striker said: “This terrible refereeing decision helped Liverpool as it was another game in this strange Premier League season. Konate should have been sent off, plain and simple, and Klopp confirmed the referee realized he had made a terrible mistake when he immediately substituted the defender. The nerves returned in the final period when Everton equalized nine minutes from added time. The match was then wrapped up with a superb break from Darwin Nunes, followed by a superb finish from Salah.
“Every three points counts in a derby and Liverpool remain a red city and I’m sure they will for a long time!” But there is no need to tell Klopp that Liverpool need to play much better this season if they are to stay in the title race. “Salah had his worst performance of the season yesterday, but when he had the chance, he created a winning moment. Alexis McAllister was off the pace and Kostas Tsimikas had his worst game in a Liverpool shirt and had to be sent off. “At the end of the day, the match officials helped Liverpool win this game and you don’t want to win any football game.”
