Caoimhin Kelleher returned to training the day after missing the two games leading up to the international break, and Cody Gakpo made progress in his recovery from his knee injury.
The second-choice goalkeeper was denied the chance to start the second straight Europa League game due to the timing of the Irishman’s cut to his leg, which required 12 stitches. Kelleher was unable to participate in Union SG’s earlier this month visit, and as a result, he was not included in the matchday squad at Brighton or Ireland’s roster for the international matches in October. Kelleher apparently required “12 stitches in a knee joint,” according to Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, following a collision on the practice field. But the 24-year-old was back in the gym and on the field with the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s team as they prepared for the Saturday derby. The 24-year-old has made two appearances so far this season and will be keeping an eye on the League Cup trip to Bournemouth on November 1 for another chance in goal.
Andy Robertson, Conor Bradley, Thiago, and Stefan Bajcetic remain injured despite Kelleher’s return to training, and Curtis Jones is still out for the upcoming two domestic matches.
