Although the Liverpool pair has been playing a lot, they still need to play more. Liverpool’s offensive line is undoubtedly on fire thus far this season, but they also have a developing partnership that settles any disagreements they may have in that regard.
In Jurgen Klopp’s attack, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah are the two main starters on both flanks, and Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez are the two players vying for the starting spot. Diogo Jota has scored a lot of goals, but the majority of them have come as a substitute or late in games; three of his four goals have come in the 76th, 90th, and 90th minutes; he is currently the backup to those two. Gakpo and Nunez have split the attention thus far; the Dutchman has three goals overall, while the Uruguayan has scored four goals and provided three assists.
Though Nunez enjoys running into space and being the center of attention in the box, Gakpo is thought to be a better all-around player and enjoys coming short to link-up. Due to his quick feet and ability to come short, for example, Gakpo may be more suited to teams that operate a deep block, while Nunez might be better in games where there is more room for attacks. However, it appears that one astounding statistic has ended the argument. Nunez and Salah, the team’s main and best attacker, get along incredibly well. Even with Nunez’s inadequacies in front of goal in his rookie campaign, this was evident last season as well. They’ve combined for 10 chances in just 294 minutes this season, which makes them the most effective duo in the league ahead of Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby of Aston Villa. That works out to 29 minutes per chance.
Given the statistics, Nunez might deserve a solid run in the team, particularly in the league, as Gakpo has started five times and Nunez three times. However, with Nunez costing £64 million (plus an additional £21 million), everyone associated with the team would prefer to see him establish himself as the team’s best offensive option and lead the Reds back into the running for titles and trophies.
