According to Fichajes, Arsenal will compete with Liverpool for Kalvin Phillips, a Manchester City outcast, during the January transfer window. Following his successful £42 million transfer from Leeds United in 2022, Phillips has found it difficult to establish himself at City.
One of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League, Phillips was considered before he moved to the Etihad Stadium. But at City, the 27-year-old England international has suffered a number of injuries. For the 2022–2023 season, he played for the Cityzens in the Premier League for a mere 290 minutes. His 1596 league minutes from his final season with Leeds United were far less than this.
According to reports, North London giants Arsenal are presently considering a January transfer for Phillips. Head coach Mikel Arteta thinks Phillips is the best choice because he wants to give his midfield more strength and aggression. They won’t, however, be given the player’s freedom as Liverpool is also rumored to be interested. In the summer transfer window, the Reds suffered two setbacks in their pursuit of a seasoned Premier League holding midfield player. Liverpool lost out to league rival Chelsea on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
January may see a review of the holding midfield position by Klopp’s team, and Fichajes reports indicate that Phillips is viewed as the best available option for the Reds. So far this season, the 27-year-old has played 70 league minutes for City across three Premier League appearances.
