Liverpool are in talks with Piero Hincapie’s agency about a January move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen.
The Ecuador international, who represented his country at the 2022 World Cup, has been a major element of Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen team since the Spaniard took over.
Hincapie, a versatile defender who can play at both centre-back and left-back, is known for his explosive pace and distributing talents.
He only missed four Bundesliga games last season, three due to suspension, but he has been suffering with injury this season.Last season, the 21-year-old collected 13 yellow cards and three red cards in the league, with discipline being an area of his game that Reds manager Jurgen Klopp may want to address should the defender be released.
Hincapie, according to his agent Manuel Sierra, could join Liverpool in January.
Piero Hincapie is ‘in talks’ with Liverpool.
Sierra told Futbol San Cassette’s Joaquin Saavedra (via Bolavip): “Liverpool were interested in [Hincapie] in the summer, but they chose to invest in the midfield at the time.” “For January, they are talking like other clubs,” Sierra added. It will be at least £50 million.”
The Reds signed four midfielders this summer in an attempt to address the position after a slew of planned and unforeseen departures.
Supporters have expressed concern about a lack of depth at center back, while teenage defender Jarell Quansah has moved up into a first team role this season after spending the second half of last season on loan. The Reds will be hoping that the same does not happen in negotiations with Hincapie, and that they can sign a defender who has refined his game under Reds legend Alonso – a player who the Spaniard described as’modern’ and ‘active’.
