Pascal Gross of Brighton and Hove Albion avoided a red card against Liverpool for a reason that has now been disclosed.
Liverpool arrived at the Amex Stadium on Sunday afternoon aiming to rebound from their stunning 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur the previous weekend.
Jurgen Klopp’s side fell behind 1-0 against Brighton after Simon Adingra capitalized on an error by Alexis Mac Allister.Mohamed Salah then scored two goals in six minutes to put Liverpool up 2-1 at the interval.
The Reds were denied all three points after Lewis Dunk equalized in the 78th minute.
Liverpool were awarded a penalty in the first half after Gross obstructed Dominik Szoboszlai inside the 18-yard area.
Gross, on the other hand, was not even given a yellow card, as many expected.Gross was not issued a red card, according to the Liverpool Echo, because officials deemed Szoboszlai did not have a clear opportunity to score and was moving away from the goal.
After the game, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp addressed the issue.
“I don’t know – I really have no idea,” he remarked.
“I thought it was a yellow card if the foul was in the penalty box.” If it had been outside, it would have been a red. I’m not sure – don’t ask me about the rules. “I’ll take what I can get.”
During his news conference, Klopp explained, “I saw it was a penalty and didn’t think about red, but I heard now it is about goalscoring opportunity.”
