Despite a solid start to the season, they continue to struggle with one underlying tendency.
There aren’t many, if any, reasons for Liverpool fans to be anything other than very satisfied so far this season given their undefeated and fantastic start. After all, their summer acquisitions have made an immediate impact, Darwin Nunez appears to be becoming a more proficient attacker, there is a good youth contingent, and Mohamed Salah keeps dazzling.
A 3-1 victory over LASK yesterday night gave them a winning start to their Europa League campaign thanks to goals from Nunez, Salah, and Luis Diaz. However, there is one glaring flaw that keeps letting them down and, if it persists, it could scupper what could otherwise be a very successful season.
Liverpool has thus far scored five goals and allowed five goals in each half of the season, but they have scored 10 unanswered goals in the second halves. Whatever you want to call them—the comeback kings or the menality monsters—the key thing is that they are demonstrating the same tenacity and toughness that once perfectly summed up their entire attitude during their most prosperous periods.
The greatest teams simply do not offer these opportunities, and if it persists, they will eventually be exposed against harder competition, as miracles like Newcastle’s triumph do not happen every single week.
Of course, the new midfield arrivals still have some adjusting to do, and there have also been tactical changes that have taken some time to develop. The majority of the performances and the results thus far will delight Klopp, but unless Liverpool want to score two or three goals each game, this regrettable and frequent occurrence cannot continue throughout the remainder of the season.
