Gary Neville’s comments from before the season on Liverpool’s midfield have come up again on social media in the wake of Manchester United’s disastrous start to the year. Liverpool leads United by seven points with five games left in the Premier League season, and there are 10 slots separating the two teams in the rankings.

The Red Devils began their season with a dramatic 1-0 home victory over Wolves, but since then, they have dropped to the bottom of the standings after losing three of their previous four games. On the other side, Jurgen Klopp’s squad has defeated Wolves, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Bournemouth, and Bournemouth while only dropping a point at Chelsea on the first weekend of the season.
After four key players left and four others came during the summer, much was made about how Liverpool would adjust to a new-look midfield. However, the Reds have so far handled this obstacle with ease. Prior to the 2023–24 season beginning, Neville voiced his concerns over the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Brighton comfortably sliced through United’s midfield on their way to a decisive 3-1 victory at Old Trafford, in contrast, making it clear that United’s unit is the poorer of the two. Neville’s remarks have been eagerly brought up by Liverpool supporters, including Jamie Carragher. After taking part in the initial discussion with Neville on Sky Sports’ “The Overlap” at the beginning of August, Carragher shared the footage on Twitter.
They’ll probably win the league before Liverpool, in my opinion. That’s not insulting; they’ll likely win the league before Liverpool. Naturally, Klopp’s squad would defeat United that season by 18 points to claim the title and end 33 points ahead.
