Gary Lineker, a veteran of England and host of Match of the Day, believes Trent Alexander-Arnold will excel as a playmaker in the middle of the field.
For a while, there has been much discussion about Alexander-Arnold’s best position, with some people—including Lineker—arguing that the 24-year-old should switch to midfield.
Liverpool enjoyed an improvement in form after converting to a new system that saw Alexander-Arnold play a hybrid right-back and midfield role in the 2022–23 season, which had gotten off to a rough start.
Alexander-Arnold was one of the midfielders on Gareth Southgate’s September international squad list before the Liverpool academy product withdrew due to a hamstring injury. Southgate recently favoured Alexander-Arnold in a center three.
His tremendous passing range is constrained from right-back because you can only pass to the left. He would be much better since you can go both ways when you play in the middle. He was a midfielder growing up, but by coincidence, he was given a chance to play right back and excelled there.
Alexander-Arnold, who has only contributed one assist so far this year, seems to suggest that he is OK playing wherever he is instructed to.
It’s not my decision, he declared. All I can say is that I enjoy playing football, particularly right-back and in the centre of the pitch, as I only play where I am instructed to play.
“I enjoy the challenge of the two and I find joy there, so you know I would enjoy playing there in the next season, but it’s not up to me where I play,” the athlete said.
