Brazil interim coach Fernando Diniz has rated Alisson ‘among the three best goalkeepers in the world’, as he discussed the ongoing battle for the national team’s number one spot.
Alisson has earned 61 caps since making his Brazil debut in 2015 and was the regular first-choice under former coach Tite, who managed the Seleção between 2016 and 2022.
While the Liverpool number one was first choice at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, he was left out of the Brazil squad back in March by then caretaker coach Ramon Menezes – a decision that surprised many.
Alisson was included in the latest squad for September’s World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru, but he failed to get on the pitch in either fixture, with Manchester City’s Ederson playing instead.
It now appears as though the former Roma stopper has a battle to regain his position as his country’s undisputed starter.
Speaking about his goalkeeping situation, Diniz – who was appointed Brazil’s interim coach on a one-year deal this summer – admitted he is happy to leave the competition ongoing.
“I think it’s always difficult. It was also difficult for Tite,” Diniz said. “I think both [Alisson and Ederson] are among the three best goalkeepers in the world, so it’s always hard for you to make an assessment and decide. Any time, any of them can play.
Then it’s a matter of feeling the moment for you to decide. Right now, we’re going to start with Ederson, but it’s a dispute that will always be open.”
30-year-old Alisson, who has played every minute for Liverpool so far in 2023/24, was recently left off the shortlist for the Yashin Trophy – France Football’s Ballon d’Or equivalent for goalkeepers
