The Englishman has reportedly been back working at the club in some capacity since “mid-August,” according to Dave Davis’ information on Anfield Index.

“During the last week of the transfer window, Julian Ward was once again linked with Liverpool. He has been involved with Liverpool since mid-August.
The Merseysiders and their present sports director are scheduled to meet at some point to discuss the latter’s prospective future with the team, though it is not yet apparent whether either party is eager to continue the connection in the future.
 It would be quite the turnaround to see Ward return to Anfield and take up the reins he left there only a few months ago, amid rumors that he had taken a new position at Ajax Amsterdam.
Although a returning member of our world-class recruitment team may not be the face fans were expecting for when they heard that a previous sporting director (cough, cough, Michael Edwards) was returning, it’s still not a terrible development for the club.
If the aforementioned information is to be taken at more than face value, then he may be interested in returning to Liverpool in a more significant manner.
All of that is still up in the air, but it is one tale worth monitoring in the coming months for changes.
