If and when Jurgen Klopp decides to leave Liverpool, the club will explore appointing Xabi Alonso as manager; he shouldn’t be too difficult to land either.
Liverpool are keeping a careful eye on the progress of the former Reds midfielder, who has been making waves at Bundesliga-leading Bayer Leverkusen after winning all three of their opening matches at home.
Although Klopp’s contract at Anfield doesn’t expire until 2026, there are rumors that the former Dortmund manager may be searching for a new challenge. These rumors have grown more intense in the wake of Germany’s dismissal of Hansi Flick.
Alonso will be open to Liverpool’s proposal should Klopp depart since, according to the German publication Bild, he has a “secret agreement” with Leverkusen that permits him to quit the team whenever he pleases.
After three years as Real Sociedad B’s manager, Alonso joined Leverkusen in October of last year. His contract, like Klopp’s, is up in 2026, but it’s believed the club will not obstruct him if a “suitable offer” is made for him earlier.The 2002 Champions League finalists are led by a 41-year-old manager who has won 22 of his 42 games since taking over. In less than a year, the team went from fighting for survival to competing for European spots.
Alonso joined Liverpool from Real Sociedad in 2004 and played there for five seasons. He was a member of the team that won the FA Cup in 2006 as well as the Champions League in his first season with the organization, scoring the equalizer in a thrilling 3-3 tie with AC Milan in the final.
He moved on to Bayern Munich in 2014 after departing for Real Madrid in 2009, where he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League once again. Over the subsequent three seasons, the Bundesliga won three championships before Alonso, then 35, decided to hang up his boots.
