Graeme Souness thinks that Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are two “stars” that Liverpool have uncovered, but he is not sure that Wataru Endo will play a significant role this year.
The Reds were aggressive in their pursuit of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai in the transfer market and have already seen the caliber of both players in action in the early going of the current campaign.
Prior to Ryan Gravenberch’s addition on deadline day, Japan international Wataru Endo, who is still somewhat of an enigma, completed a deal after their arrivals at the club. After recent victories over Newcastle United and Aston Villa, Liverpool supporters are encouraged that their midfield rebuild could succeed despite missing out on their top target at this position, Jude Bellingham.
Souness commented on Jurgen Klopp’s team’s summer activities, saying: “I like Szoboszlai and I am a huge fan of Mac Allister. We’ll have to wait and see with Endo. The Premier League is more intense and rigorous than any other league, so just because you have success in the Bundesliga doesn’t guarantee success there. Watch to see how he responds to that.
“The fact that they paid more than £100 million for Caicedo tells you that Klopp believes that area needs to be strengthened. According to how I now perceive Liverpool, they have enough goals on the team, a more-than-capable defense, and a more-than-capable goalkeeper, but the midfield combination he will have to utilize is not quite perfect. Since Matip struggles to stay healthy, I’d like to see them sign another central defender and another central midfielder. Endo would imply that he is a squad player based on the amount of money they spent.
