According to 90min, Jurgen Klopp is one of the top candidates for the position of head coach for the German national team, according to the DFB.
Following a terrible 4-1 loss to Japan on Saturday night, Hansi Flick was fired, becoming the first German manager to ever experience such an event. Germany’s World Cup campaign, which ended in group stage failure, was profoundly disappointing, and Flick had presided over a five-game losing streak since March.
Germany is now eager to replace Flick with a top-tier manager ahead of a home Euro 2024 next summer, and sources have confirmed to 90min that Klopp is one of their top contenders for the open role.
We understand that the DFB is so smitten with Klopp that they may even contemplate letting Klopp finish the 2023–24 season with Liverpool before hiring him on a full-time basis right before Euro 2024.
When asked whether he might accept the position in Germany during a summer interview with Sky Germany, Klopp responded:
There is no doubt that being the national coach is and would be a wonderful honor. My loyalty is the issue that prevents the whole thing from happening.
“I can’t just up and leave Liverpool now and declare that I’ll rule Germany for a while. The request isn’t even there, therefore that doesn’t function. I need to be available if I’m going to do it at some time, which I’m not at the moment. I have an obligation to the club.
In general, it’s a fascinating job. After I leave Liverpool, I’m not sure if I’ll do something entirely different, though. I want to have a variety of possibilities.
90min is aware that Thomas Tuchel is a candidate for the position of Germany’s head coach together with Jurgen Klopp. The DFB, like Klopp, would think about letting Tuchel finish the season at Bayern before taking over on a permanent basis.
