Three Premier League heavyweights will compete for Lloyd Kelly’s signature in January, according to a report.
The Bournemouth star is out of contract at the end of the season and has no intention of extending his stay on the south coast of England. This has attracted the attention of several Premier League clubs, with Tottenham already making a late bid in the summer window.
This approach was rejected as Bournemouth felt they did not have enough time to bring in a replacement. This was a gamble as they now face the threat of losing Kelly for nothing next summer, but will be heartened by the fact that some clubs may be desperate enough to pay in January. According to 90min, Tottenham are ready to replace Kelly again after recently releasing Davidson Sanchez at Galatasaray. Moreover, Newcastle United are considering a move for the 24-year-old after he was stretched defensively through injuries at the start of the season.
What makes Kelly so attractive is the fact that he is a left-sided centre-back, which is a rare commodity in football. That’s why Liverpool are also interested. Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier this summer that the Anfield club were scouring the market for young left-backs but nothing ultimately materialized as Liverpool focused more on completing the midfield rebuild .
Micky van de Ven was one of the players targeted by the Reds, but he ended up signing for Tottenham. Given the length of his contract, Kelly could represent good value in January, although it might be wiser – and certainly cheaper – to take him on a pre-contract for the summer.
