Liverpool made Ryan Gravenberch, a midfielder for Bayern Munich, its fourth and final acquisition of a hectic summer transfer season on the final day of the window.
After Bayern expressed interest in a trade, the Reds promptly worked out a $43 million (£34 million/€40 million) deal and flew Gravenberch to Merseyside to sign a five-year contract.
The last time around, Gravenberch wasn’t registered in time to play against Aston Villa, but he might be in line to do so in the trip to Wolves right after the international break.
The 21-year-old joins a team that has more and more Dutch players after Cody Gakpo joined in January and Virgil van Dijk was named captain earlier this summer.
Pep Lijnders, the assistant manager, and Georginio Wijnaldum, one of the most illustrious figures of the glitzy Jürgen Klopp period, are both natives of the Netherlands.
Interestingly, senior recruitment personnel at Anfield ‘think there are similarities’ between Gravenberch and his predecessor Wijnaldum, according to The Athletic.
The latter joined in 2016 from Newcastle United and played 237 games for the team before departing on a free transfer to join Paris Saint-Germain at the conclusion of the 2020–21 season. He won the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup while he was at Anfield.
