Prior to becoming a commentator, Hansen was a 26-cap Scotland international defender. He was most well-known, though, for his 14-year run at Anfield, where he won three European Cups and eight league championships.

After winning what would turn out to be Liverpool’s last league championship until 2020, Hansen’s playing career ended in 1991. But instead of going into management, he chose the studio, and when that stage of his life came to a close, he was just as eager to leave the world at the top of his game.
Hansen announced his retirement from Match of the Day at the beginning of the 2013–14 season. “I’ll be 59 and will have worked there for 22 years, so the time is appropriate for me.
