After missing the senior team’s past season, Gravenberch was expected to be called up to the Dutch Juniors under-21 team.
However, after switching from Bayern Munich to Liverpool on deadline day, the 21-year-old turned down the call-up.
In a statement posted to their website, the Dutch football federation, the KNVB, announced that Gravenberch had notified them that he wanted to concentrate on adjusting to his new team.
In their statement, they stated: “The Liverpool FC midfielder has indicated to KNVB coach Michael Reiziger that he wants to focus on his new club during the international match in September and will, therefore, not make himself available.”
In his subsequent press conference, Netherlands manager Koeman expressed his displeasure with Ryan Gravenberch, saying (via Voetbal Nieuws): “For Ryan Gravenberch, we are not delighted with that. In addition, he has spoken with Nigel [De Jong]. Good performances at the Dutch Juniors can help you advance.
 According to rumors, the Reds even got in touch with the KNVB to talk about Gravenberch’s withdrawal, and the player apparently informed management of his choice.
Therefore, Koeman’s response is claimed to have taken Reds management by surprise, as the midfielder is now concentrating on adjusting to his new club during the international break rather than participating in international matches.
On deadline day, Gravenberch signed a contract with Anfield for an initial sum of £35 million, which increased to £40 million with add-ons.
Prior to his transfer to Bayern last summer, the Reds had made the Dutch international one among their top objectives. This summer, they have renewed their interest in him.
For the majority of the transfer window, Bayern did not want to sell the player, but Liverpool pounced on their chance late in the process to bring in a fourth midfielder for manager Jurgen Klopp this summer.
