Following his dismissal against Newcastle, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was fined £100,000 and handed a one-match suspension for acting improperly.
Following the dismissal, the FA filed a charge against Van Dijk, alleging that the Dutch defender used “abusive and/or insulting words” to referee John Brooks.
Last month, the Liverpool captain fouled attacker Alexander Isak on the brink of the Reds’ box and was dismissed against Newcastle.
The 32-year-old refused to leave the field after Brooks flashed the red card, though, and instead gave him a piece of his mind. Before exiting the St. James’ tunnel, Van Dijk also looked to quarrel with the fourth official. He has now admitted to acting inappropriately toward Brooks.
Van Dijk will now also be absent from Liverpool’s return to Premier League play next Saturday, September 16, when Jurgen Klopp and co. travel to Molyneux to face Wolves. Van Dijk is currently overseas on international duty with the Netherlands.
