Michael Edwards, a former sporting director at Liverpool, plans to go back into football by starting a consulting business.
After a fruitful 11-year tenure at Anfield, where he contributed to the creation of the team that has won the most trophies in a generation, the 43-year-old left the club last summer. Under his leadership, Liverpool won every significant award at their disposal, such as the Premier League and Champions League.
 Since leaving Liverpool, Edwards’ future has been the subject of rumors, with Chelsea and other European teams rumored to be interested in the Englishman. Before Jorg Schmadtke was named sporting director in July 2022–2023, Julian Ward succeeded Edwards in that position.
As for Edwards, he is currently planning to rejoin Ludonautics alongside Ian Graham, the former director of research at Liverpool. According to The Athletic, however Edwards’ immediate focus will be on Graham’s new company, this employment, which would see Edwards reunited with his former Reds colleague, will not prohibit Edwards from taking a permanent job elsewhere.
According to the report, sources with inside knowledge of the situation think Edwards has no plans to go on to another athletic director position. That would be a setback for teams pursuing Edwards, since Manchester United and Chelsea were both said to be interested in him last year.
In addition to helping the Reds win their sixth Champions League in 2020 and their first-ever Premier League championship, Edwards and Graham were instrumental in leading Liverpool back to the top. Along with Klopp, he undertook a significant renovation of the playing roster, bringing in players like Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane.
Last year, he sent an open letter to the fans to announce his departure from Liverpool. Ten years is a considerable amount of time in anyone’s working life, it began. In terms of sport, it’s a distinct period, especially at a team like Liverpool where the expectations and standards are always as high as the fans deserve.
