Cody Gakpo stressed the need of making yourself ready to play several positions for Liverpool in order to demonstrate his versatility.
Jurgen Klopp would have been happy to have had the option to use Gakpo at the start of the season when Liverpool was lacking in midfield options, and the Dutchman excelled in his role as a left-sided number eight as the Reds drew a point against Chelsea and defeated Bournemouth in their first two games.
Fans have grown accustomed to the variety Gakpo would offer to Liverpool’s attacking line since joining the team in January.
The Dutch star had just finished a fantastic season and a half with PSV in the Eredivisie, where he had played both left winger and central forward
The Dutchman discussed how critical it is for him to continue to be versatile depending on the requirements of the squad in an interview with Voetbal International (via Sport Witness).
“When you play a different position, it always takes some getting used to, but it’s also important to pick it up quickly and demonstrate my versatility as a player,” he said. It doesn’t matter where you play; all you want to do is contribute.
He continued by saying that maintaining versatility is essential to improving as a player.
Gakpo has rapidly gained popularity among fans because of this approach, but his international teammate and Liverpool teammate made it easier for him to adapt to the club so quickly.
