Liverpool never wanted Darwin Nunez to go this summer, despite rumors that a trade for Joao Felix was under consideration.
On the club side, the decision to keep Darwin was made very plainly by the board and the manager. Darwin was overjoyed that Liverpool thought he was untouchable.
Nunez didn’t play in the first three games of the season because Cody Gakpo started in his place, but after coming off the bench to score twice in the 2-1 victory against Newcastle, he was included in the starting lineup for the weekend’s 3-0 triumph over Aston Villa. It is evident that boss Jurgen Klopp has big ambitions for the striker.
Nunez has not always been a regular starter since his £85 million move from Benfica last year, despite the fact that his boss obviously still has faith in him.
It seems like the 24-year-old still has a lot to learn about both his own personal development and the way the squad functions as a whole. Over the ensuing weeks, it will be interesting to observe if he starts to play a bigger role.
