The $100 million (£80 million) renovation project’s contractors, Buckingham Group, failed, and Liverpool now controls the Anfield Road construction site.
446 jobs were lost when the company filed for administration in August. However, no buyer could be found for the company’s operations in building, civil engineering, demolition, big projects, sport, and leisure. Only the rail business of the company was rescued and sold to Kier Group.
Liverpool’s initial intentions for a full opening of the stand, which would have added an additional 7,000 seats and raised Anfield’s capacity to 61,000, had been delayed by the failure of Buckingham Group. The club is now in charge of the construction site, so once new contractors are chosen, work can resume.
According to Dave Powell, a business of sport reporter for the Liverpool ECHO, Liverpool is actively looking for a replacement contractor to ensure the stand’s timely, phased completion. The stand’s continued operations have not been impacted by the rebuilding project.
