Jesper Lindstrm, an exciting attacking midfielder, has spoken out about his choice to reject Liverpool and sign with Italian champions Napoli last week after agreeing to a $33 million (£26 million/€30 million) transfer.
The midfielder from Denmark, who joined the Serie A champions from Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, explained why he chose Napoli over his previous team Liverpool. The transfer, according to Lindstrm, who signed a five-year contract with Napoli, would provide him more opportunity to play, which will help him advance in his career.
In 27 games for Frankfurt last season, Lindstrm, 23, scored seven goals, sparking a lot of discussion. He claims he had the option to relocate to Anfield but chose not to.
It was Liverpool, and I am a Liverpool supporter, so it would’ve been a crazy intriguing experience, but would it have been a wise move? Lindstrm said in a statement to Football Italia.
“If I don’t play, then I might as well watch them play there on TV while I’m at another club,” he said. I have to play football because of my age. Because of this, I believe Napoli is a positive change. One of the top clubs in the world, and they assured me that I would get lots of chances to play.
“It is not possible to walk the streets of the city (Naples), which is another reason why many of the players live on the outskirts,” continued Lindstrm. You have to hide yourself if you want to go on a walk without being attacked for taking a selfie.
“There is just one club in Naples; everyone here grew up supporting Napoli, and it is extremely intense, so I knew it would be like this. I can’t just get a coffee and leave. It’s unusual, but a fun experience.
