Ryan Gravenberch’s refusal to participate for the Netherlands Under-21 team has angered Ronald Koeman, who declared he is “not happy” about it.
In set to be called up for the under-21 Netherlands team for the forthcoming international break, Gravenberch joined the Reds on deadline day. Due to his tardy arrival to Anfield, the midfielder has instead chosen to withdraw from contention.
The Dutch FA has taken issue with that choice, with both Michael Reiziger, manager of the Under-21 team, and Koeman, manager of the national team, criticizing Gravenberch. Koeman emphasized what transpired with Jeremie Frimpong, who had before declined to play for the U21s.
“Ryan Gravenberch’s decision to decline playing for his country has not pleased us. Before the senior team’s matches against Greece and Ireland, Koeman said, “We don’t like it when players refuse to play for the U21 team.
“I hope Ryan Gravenberch takes something away from this. He won’t automatically be called up again, though. He must take this as a lesson. You want to be a part of that because playing for your nation is an honor, according to Reiziger.
“Plus, it can help you become famous. You have the support of the entire country as you fight for your country. You only have one area of the city behind you when you’re at your club. I disagree with Gravenberch’s selection.
I’ve already told him this. If you have the opportunity to join the National Team, you should. Additionally, you don’t begin to consider yourself. But I’m looking for athletes that want to play with passion for our nation.
