Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving the pitch after 71 minutes will worry Liverpool supporters in what was otherwise a fantastic afternoon at Anfield.
The Reds’ full-back’s injury left a rather bitter aftertaste after a clinical 3-0 win over Aston Villa prolonged their unbeaten start to the Premier League season, thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah, either side of an own goal by Matty Cash.
After the game, Reds head coach Jürgen Klopp revealed that his vice-captain, who took over as skipper in place of suspended Virgil van Dijk, has a hamstring injury.
He told reporters, “We have to wait for the scan,” before adding that Trent had described the injury as “nothing serious.”
It will be hoped that Alexander-Arnold will be ready in time for the Reds’ return after the international break against Wolverhampton Wanderers in mid-September after turning in yet another impressive performance at Anfield, including an assist for Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning opening goal within the first three minutes.
He grabbed control just inside his team’s half of the field midway through the first half with the Reds leading 1-0. He took a brief look up before finding Mo Salah with a 50-yard pass that was inch-perfect.
The unfortunate Matty Cash was the recipient of Darwin Nunez’s shot, which rebounded off the post and finished the move. The ball subsequently went over the goal line to give the home team a bigger lead.
The Villa defender will be awarded credit for the own goal, but Trent’s most recent addition to his extensive history of jaw-droppingly amazing passes played a significant role in it. The fact that it won’t be acknowledged as a writing assistance is irrelevant.
