Virgil van Dijk, a center back for Liverpool, has been charged by the association for his actions after receiving a red card in the team’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle United.
Shortly before the half-hour mark, Van Dijk fouled Alexander Isak, the final defender for Liverpool, and was promptly given a straight red card.
Van Dijk was seen shouting with referee John Brooks as the judgment was being reviewed by VAR, and the FA has decided to take action against the Liverpool center-back as a result.
The FA released a statement that said, “Virgil van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August.”
The defender is alleged to have behaved improperly and/or spoken abusively or insultingly to a match official.Â
If Van Dijk is found guilty, his suspension can be prolonged. The Dutchman’s participation in upcoming matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United now appears to be in doubt. He is already expected to miss Sunday’s visit from Aston Villa.
The suspension of Van Dijk comes at a difficult moment for Liverpool, who are already without Ibrahima Konate due to injury.
Konate will return during the international break, according to manager Jurgen Klopp. “Serious enough, but not overly so.
Villa might have a chance, but I anticipate that he will return during the international break.
The three center backs left on Klopp’s roster are Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, and Nat Phillips.
