Van Dijk was charged with fouling Isak close to the edge of the penalty area after Liverpool gave up a goal. He received a straight red card from referee Brooks, which VAR confirmed since Isak was believed to have been denied a clear opportunity to score. Van Dijk will therefore be given a one-match suspension and miss the encounter on September 3rd against Aston Villa.
Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister had previously served a punishment for the match against Bournemouth, but it was overturned on appeal. Van Dijk’s dismissal, nevertheless, is not likely to be overturned.
Additionally, due of his argument with the referee and the fourth official, there is a risk that the punishment will be prolonged.
Liverpool will suffer a great deal in the coming weeks as a result of Van Dijk’s absence, and they will be hoping that the sentence is not increased.
